Temporary SGR "fix" Signed By President Obama

The Temporary Extension Act of 2010 that was passed by the Senate and House on Tuesday has been signed into law by President Obama. This act will extend the zero percent update to the Medicare Physician Fee Schedule through March 31, 2010, thereby avoiding the 21.2% reduction.

Now the Senate will set to the task of passing the American Workers, State and Business Relief Act. Approval of this act would delay the payment cut until October 1, 2010. It is still yet to be seen if the Senate will pass the bill, previously approved by the House, which repeals the SGR and replaces it with a formula that physicians consider more equitable.

CMS had instructed carriers last week to hold claims with March dates of service for 10 days to allow Congress more time to pass a fix. This has ensured that physicians should not see any claims paid at the 21.2% reduced rate and would now be in need of reprocessing.

Med USA will continue to monitor this situation and keep you informed of the latest developments. If you have any questions please feel free to contact Liz Gardner at 801.352.9500 ext 1308 or email lgardner@medusabil.com
